Never mind that sound cannot travel through the vacuum of space or within an accelerator's beam line the bangs, roars and whooshes that punctuate this film dramatize its action, much as similarly inaccurate sounds did for ''Star Wars.''

''Cosmic Voyage'' is a spectacular primer in scales.Įxploiting to the maximum an IMAX screen four stories high and a surround-sound speaker system that could stun a stadium full of people, ''Cosmic Voyage,'' which opened last week at the American Museum of Natural History, is strong on computer-simulated fireworks: the thunderous blast of the big bang creation event, the shattering explosion of a supernova, a roaring race-track ride for a proton as it speeds through a giant particle accelerator. One of a teacher's toughest jobs is to instill a sense of proportion: not just a feel for ''A is to B as C is to D,'' but a deeper sense of the space and time scales defining the hierarchical structure of the universe, and the place of mankind within it.
